Spain is a beautiful country with a beautiful culture and enchanting nature, but unfortunately this country is also known for its cruel history in relation to animals.
Everyone knows the Spanish Greyhound or according to his Spanish name the Podenco. This elegant dog used to be bred exclusively for hunting rabbits. Often they were starved prior to hunting because this would benefit the drive and the hunting instinct.
Unfortunately, in Spain it has been "normal" for a long time to torture, kill or dump dogs after proven services. The good hunters, who were no longer successful, were hung high in the tree to die quickly. The bad hunters were hung just above the ground with their legs to extend their suffering.
Times are changing, but to this day stray dogs and cats in Spain remain daily costs.
It is nice to see how many foreigners in Spain have committed themselves with heart and soul to the fate of these animals. Some shelters have grown into beautiful organizations and they could turn the terrible fate of thousands of animals!
But help will always be needed!
You can contribute in many ways because donations, adoptions and helping hands are always welcome! Many shelters can use help with washing animals, having walks with the dogs, looking for sponsors etc. There is also a great demand for shelter or foster homes. Very young puppies need to be fed every few hours and at night, shelters are often closed.
